I am seeing discipleship in a new light over the last couple of years. Previously, I went with the classic definition of “learner” or a “student” and therefore considered the primary purpose of the student was to learn head knowledge. Today I see it in a much more hands on approach. A disciple in essence is an apprentice. A disciple not only learns but develops a skill that is only perfected by repeatedly using that skill. Like a craftsman who perfects an art…say a woodcarver. He learns about different woods and the tools used to carve, but will never accomplish anything until he starts making wood chips and then has input from a mentor who is skilled to bring out the best in his apprentice.
